man, i remember this ad. I never thought i'd see the end of axion
ahh dope ad, never seen this before.sceptical as to how good this new look axion will be...
i feel like since its the past, we can talk freely...axion made mediocre to okay kicks, and saying they are "okay" is being nice. they were just straight up cheap-looking and weak materials. everyone's pro-model sucked, except for maybe kareem's. you'd look like a clown if you wore those wack-ass Guy pro-models; i can't believe people ever wore or bought those.Had they had a better graphic design team, and better branding... maybe the company would still exist. The company stood on the strength of the team. The Duffs KCK's on the other hand looked tight, but that's not even AXION.
Carryout - I gotta disagree. All of the early pro models were solid, especially Kareem's first couple of shoes, Gino's "Islander" and most of all Guy's first shoe. It is obvious that your tastes are different from mine; I liked the Aries (Guy's second shoe) and skated two or three pairs. The synthetic ones were kind of slippery but the suede or leather ones were great. Axions got really wack eventually but for a while they had a bunch of really great shoes. Compared to the other popular shoes of the era(Osiris, Muska's Es model, Most DCs) Axions were pretty slim as well. I mean this was before everybody started skating in half-cabs again. I think that calling them "cheap-looking" reflects more of your personal preferred aesthetic values and less the actual shoes themselves.I probably wouldn't skate in them now due to being used to skating in Vans for the last six or seven years, but for the time they were great kicks and it pains me to hear them being so categorically dismissed. Definitely an integral piece of 90's skate history!
I had he first Kareem´s Axion, and I must say, I totally felt the designs, but the materials and confort was weak.Axion had a SICK team, no doubt, but their designs ( Gino´s shoes for exemple ) were not too cool.Sick ad, Kennan era.
yeah... those first white with blue and yellow trim Guy shoes were really cheap looking. Like K-Mart cheap fake leather. I had a pair of navy Islanders that were decent enough for the time. That Gino ad is sick though.
damn. categorical dismissal. harsh haha.
fuck that, I always wanted the white Mariano's
Gotta agree with hairfarmer. Axions were the shit atleast till their first death. they were fairly slim and some of them lasted me long (triads). I had so many pairs i really loved their shit
my whole crew and i loved axion straight out the gate... we all rocked 'em. i had a pair of of 'reems and a pair of guys. both were comfy and lasted a long time. granted the brand totally fell off (cheap shoes, questionable riders, wack colorways) but early axion was incredible. a no-brainer.
the first couple years of axion were historical.Everybody knows the kareems, the marianos, the ginos were sick, but my favourite team model was the triads. dope as fuck, great shape.
I agree the first two years of Axion was the best, I had the Duffs "KCK"s and a few pairs of the black/gum Axion models. The Aries and Islanders were pretty good, but not enough to get them again. By that time I was having to pony up my own min. wage cash to buy skate shoes and $50 Accels just fit the budget better (but boy did I still want some Aries). That was an interesting transition period for skate shoes with Kastel throwing their hat into the ring and everything. Skate shops were starting to look like Foot Lockers, not a bad thing, just weird to see the shoes that were coming out then next to some Etnies Raps/Sheep/Vans too. I do remember when I knew Axion might not be around much longer, my friend got a pair of these all white kicks, skated in them and from ollies/kickflips, his griptape had turned white, as if the shoe had white shoe polish on it or something. Oh and I'll never forget almost giving up on Guy when I saw he was in a Globe video...he never officially rode for them, right?
