Gino

The best example of fakie varial flippage. Very few people can make this trick look decent. I remember being somewhat confused upon watching Pappalardo's section in Photosynthesis; his fakie varial flip over the can at LOVE caught me off guard for a minute, until I realized that his selection of said trick was perhaps a subtle homage to the master.

Yes yes yes! I clearly remember that trick as a 411 opener along with Mariano's amazing switch heel varial. It was the first 411 that came to me after buying a subscription. My mind was blown and I went to my local spot to do fakie v-flips and switch v-heels. Thanks man.

This is THE quintessential fakie v-flip. I also learned this trick a couple years ago because I was so stoked on this clip, and every time I rocket one along the ground and fluke out on landing one, I'm always like "Yo, Gino! Yo, yo, anyone see that Gino shit?!" I think I've landed like 5 good ones and boy what a feeling.

Ian, the v-heel from Mariano is actually regular. The one off the bump out of the playground, right? Not switch. Sorry brethren.

Watson - I think that you are right about the varial heel. It was in an early Axion ad. I always wondered why nobody else had any footage skating that spot, it looked so sick. The bump looked insanely abrupt though, so maybe no one else but Guy had the skills.

What about fakie varial heels? Chico does a nice one in Paco but that's about all I can think of right now, usually that trick looks pretty busted.

Besides Gino and Pops, the only fakie varial flip that stands out in my mind is Mark Baines' one on flatground in "First Broadcast"(it's at about 3:09). Definitely an obscure example, but I remember being really impressed and it still looks good now.

Shit, now that I think about it for a second, Bobby Puleo kills that trick. How that slipped my mind I'll never know.

Okay, here's how I feel about varial flips:

Regular and switch I fucking despiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiise them! They just make me fucking sick.

Nolle and fakie, are all good. Especially fakie. I don't find it's s trick that always looks bad, but definitely Gino's is the pinnacle.

Conversely, I feel the opposite about varial heels. Regular and switch are kosher, but fakie and nollie are the biggest no-nos in skateboarding ever. But you're right. Somehow Chico can do them nicely. I think he does a line in the DVS video with a fakie v-heel down a five. Or maybe that was a guest line in someone else's section in a different video? In any case, Chico magically makes them nice.

The only other person to pull them off is Dill.

I guess that's a sure sign that someone has good style. If they can make shit tricks look good.

You are definitely right on the money about Dill's fakie varial heel. But I have to partially disagree with you; I think varial flips can look really good regular and to a lesser extent switch. Think Huf, Nate Jones or Mike Carroll.

But yeah, I kind of hate how one person will do a previously taboo trick stylishly and somehow open the floodgates for either a million wack executions or just general over-saturation. For example, I was really stoked on the resurgence of proper hardflips a la Carroll and Stevie but am tiring of them lately.

Yeah, I see where you're coming from with v-flips, but I hate them no matter who does them haha. Have you seen Cataclysmic Abyss? Gareth Stehr does one in his section that is the ultimate reason I hate that trick. But then again he's the worst pro ever with the worst style ever so....

I know exactly what you mean about hardflips. I thought the hideous hardflops would NEVER go away! It blew my mind that McCrank still did them and frontside flips like that after he got on Girl. I always imagined Carroll would sit him down and be like "Look man....." But I digress. It went straight from all shit hardflops, to everyone juicing tech hardflips so hard. Amazing trick, but it's played out now. Just like nollie inward heels (or nollie inweezy heezy as they are known in the YWS camp). But yeah, a really proper hardflip from Carroll or someone like Bryan Herman can still give me boners.

Schweet, I had that ad in my locker at school.

Wow. For the amount of times I watched those 411 openers, I fully blew it thinking that was switch. I'm down for a good v-flip, even do them myself sometimes. After this post I went and did the fuck out some some fakie v-flips.

best fakie v flip ever.

I think anything Gino does is super fucking stylish. The roll-outs are always so tough. This one is ill because he kind of sess-slides out of it but still keeps it together.
His whole part in Trilogy is just fucked-up.
Definitely my all-time favourite skateboarder.
What's up with Gino these days? Does he still skate? or is he just laying-low?

Your site is fucking-ill man, I'd like to do something like this for all the 90's nostalgia.

I agree with pulvenheimer. Best execution of that trick ever. Gino makes every trick look good. That 360 shov over the grate in Yeah Right. That shit used to be called imposters because it's an impossible that doesn't wrap around the back foot.
