Robbie Gangemi - Strength Interview

Strength Magazine was always somewhat budget; their articles and layouts were often pretty bad and they devoted half of their content to snowboard coverage. Despite all of that, they somehow managed to feature some legit heads. The issue I pulled this interview from also had interviews with Stevie Williams and Method Man, photos of Scott Johnston, Mike Carroll, Jahmal Williams, a young Nate Jones and a rare shot of John Drake. Enjoy this interview with one of my favorite skaters ever, Robbie Gangemi, interviewed by Chris Nieratko in 1998.

your site is killin it. sick interview, but i kinda disagree about strength. it was budget, but i really liked it. they had a lot of funny shit in there, a little big brotherish. i still have some issues, the kelch interview is classic.

Scott - You got me all wrong dude, I love Strength! I was just trying to point out that while they were a little more amateur than the other mags, they seemed to focus on the right skaters. You are definitely on point about the resemblance to Big Brother, probably due to Chris Nieratko's presence. After he left Strength wasn't as good. I still have a ton of back issues and will post up more stuff. The Kelch interview was a classic, Tim O'Connor cover right? Anyway, thanks for commenting!

Ah, i see... it def. was more amateurish than the other mags though. Maybe that was part of its appeal to me, it was almost like a welldone zine. Do you remember when it moved to LA and actually got some nice paper weight and better design? Then it seemed to shut down right after that. I was bummed.

It's weird, i think the Kelch interview issue i have has a snowboard pic on the cover. Didn't they used to have different covers for the same issue sometimes? I wonder if it's the same interview. Thanks for responding man, your site is awesome. I have tons of old school big bros, i should scan some of the interviews and give them to you to post up.

Scott - I think that Strength had 2 covers each issue for as long as they featured snowboarding content. The issue I pulled the Gangemi interview from had two versions: a snowboard cover and a Gangemi photo. Unfortunately I have the snowboard one.
If you feel up to contributing something, you can contact me at vitavim@gmail.com. I'm still missing some of the older Big Brother mags. Bobshirt
is doing a great job with the Big Brother interviews though, so I don't want to step on their toes too hard. That being said, I'd definitely be curious to know which issues you have. Thanks alot for stopping by, comments are always very appreciated!
