Fuck man, Guy is killing those Converse. Fuck those things are so hard to find nowadays (except for white hight tops for $15). I'd kill for a pair of the black suede with the white sole. So good. Fuck man I love that shoe. I always wondered what was going on back in the day with Guy and shoe sponsors. If you watch Mouse, he's all over the fuckin place. It seems he was never officially on anyone's rosters, which is weird for someone that important. Like, until Axion, I never once remember seeing a Guy Mariano ad for a shoe company. In this article he writes though that he was in the process of desgning his own shoe for Converse.
Fuck that would have been sick. I'd love to get my hands on any of the preliminary designs.
Watson - I know of at least one Converse ad with Guy in it - I went ahead and added it in. Pretty wack, but it's Guy. Those Converse were real popular back then, I remember calling them Dr. J's or Pros. Lots of dudes skated in them; I think that they were available at Zellers for like 35 bucks or something. Of course I would kill for a pair now, but back them I deemed them flimsy and preferred bulkier shoes. Times change I guess. The ones that Guy is wearing in the ad were the skate model that he was referring to in the interview. They were ugly then and still look shit now. I seem to remember one more Converse ad featuring Guy, but I could be wrong. I though that Rick Howard skated for them briefly as well, he was rocking them pretty heavily in Penal Code and his TWS Pro Spotlight at least.
Ahahah I blew it! Now that you posted that ad, I fully remember it because it was such a shitty ad. Good job though.
Yeah I've mentioned this before on YWS, but the Converse Pro was the very first skate shoe I ever skated. Black suede, with white sole. And now that you mention it, I think I did get them from Zellers. Shit man I've gotten some good kicks from the old Z. Anyway, I skated the Converse, and then right after that I skated Puma Suedes. Funny thing is back then all the skate guys in Saskatoon were wearing skate shoes, and I felt like a loser because I was wearing Cons and Pumas, but then I started watching videos like Penal Code and Mouse and got stoked cause guys like Mariano and Howard were wearing the shit I was wearing. (Even though I was wearing them stricly because it was what I had, I was definitely not what was considered "fresh" back then.)
Anyway, yeah since I got that pair here for $15, I want to skate some more so bad. The sole is nice and soft, feels like it would be great.
And yeah, I remember those Converse skate ones. They were total shit, they just looked so low quality. And yeah, they still do look like shit.
Thankyou for posting this, what a great epoch this was, for skating, and for Guy. This was the Koston/Mariano pro spotlight double issue and yes that was Kalis on the cover, sacred issue!
Thanks for posting this man, brought back some great memories! Hey, so I keep reading hints here and there about why Guy was underground for a while, something to do with drugs...anyone know the scoop? I don't think it's cool he had a problem or anything, I just personally know a few guys on the verge of busting out or shortly after they had a pro model to only fizzle out b/c of drugs. It's sad, but also intriguing (going to school to be a therapist, so always interested in stories with happy-ish endings like Guy's return...).
One of the best interviews ever. That issue had Kalis on the cover bs 180 off a bank with the Golden Gate Bridge in the background and it also contained the Koston interview when he's all geared up in Tour de France biking gear LOL

** - You're right. There is also an excellent Ari Marcopoulos photo feature.
Great post homie!

guess I will have a great time browsing your archive.
keep on keepin' on brah.
Oh yeah also I wanted to comment on how dope Mariano's haircut is in those opening shots haha.
Brad - Basically it came down to drugs and partying. Thank god he came back from that, huh?
Damn, I never got to see this one. Where'd you dig this issue up?
Hah, I actually recently acquired this one. Childhood dreams can come true.
